This is what people power can do
A group of campaigners in Sheringham has blocked the way for Tesco to open a branch in this town. They just can’t let Tesco shoo away private and small time traders out of business if this chain-store builds one of its branches here.
It’s a good move. I must say I salute the government who backed the people against the big-time Tesco owners/developers.
Tesco might be right to argue that the store would stop people out of Sheringham to go to nearby towns to shop. But on the other side of the fence, small business owners like convenience stores might also lose customers if Tesco is just around the bend. For sure, most people would opt to go to the superstore where they can have more choices. But the ugly truth is that others will also suffer.
